NGOCSTIP – NTT Police stop illegal migration by arresting the main suspect in a human smuggling case. The suspect, identified as PT alias Panji, was caught for smuggling 15 Bangladeshi nationals to Australia. The arrest was made by the Directorate of General Crime Investigation (Ditreskrimum) of the NTT Police.
This case began in November 2024 when two Indonesian crew members smuggled 41 Bangladeshi nationals. They used a boat to transport them through Indonesian waters towards Australia without legal documents or immigration checks.
The two Indonesian crew members abandoned the ship mid-journey. They escaped using a speedboat and left the vessel under the control of one Bangladeshi national. This left the passengers in a dangerous situation at sea.
As the vessel neared Christmas Island, it was intercepted by the Australian Border Force (ABF). The Australian authorities stopped the illegal migration attempt and repatriated 15 Bangladeshi nationals to Indonesia. Authorities handed the boat to Panji, who continued navigating the vessel.

Upon returning to Indonesia, Panji immediately dropped off the 15 Bangladeshi nationals at Hena Beach, Kolobolon Village, Lobalain District, Rote Ndao Regency. After that, he quickly fled using the same boat.
Meanwhile, authorities diligently conducted an extensive investigation and actively coordinated with Bali Police to track Panji’s movements. As a result, a joint team from the NTT Police’s Human Trafficking Task Force eventually managed to locate him in Karangasem, Bali. Furthermore, after gathering sufficient evidence, they carefully planned his arrest.
Soon, officers approached Panji while he was negotiating a canoe purchase. At first, he attempted to escape; however, the police swiftly intercepted him. Consequently, they detained him for further questioning. Ultimately, this operation marked a significant breakthrough in dismantling the smuggling network.
Authorities arrested Panji while he tried to negotiate the purchase of a locally-made canoe. The police apprehended the 39-year-old suspect and took him to the Karangasem Police Criminal Investigation Unit. After the initial questioning, authorities flew him to NTT Police Headquarters on January 31, 2025.
